How to determine what level our guys really work? and to recognise our senior technicians?

In an industry with no formal qualifications, no integrated training programs – and no common definition of what is a technician or an engineer, how do you prove the levels at which our engineers work?

It turns out the Engineering Council (responsible for the 36 professional bodies) has just such a qualification – Engineering Technician.

It doesn’t matter whether you work for Siemens, Rolls Royce, BaE or McFT,

“Engineering Technicians (EngTech) apply proven techniques and procedures to the solution of practical engineering problems”

And you prove this by completing a 2000 word submission, evidencing your role and the way you work.

With the great support of Paul Tabern and Natassja Cooper at the Institute of Mechanical Engineers, nine of our team bravely put themselves well outside their comfort zone – most had been very glad to leave the classroom behind for the world of work, so going back was daunting. And all nine successfully demonstrated that they carry out their work with the approach and the standards expected of the professional engineering bodies.

And to recognise that, all were invited (James couldn’t make it back from Dubai) to the august offices of IMechE on Birdcage Walk – to have their certificates presented by the President.
